Changes are coming to the STAR program in 2018
Changes to the STAR program agreed to in compromise negotiations in April 2016 between Gov. Cuomo and the legislature mean that beginning in the year 2018, new homeowners will no longer get the STAR rebate as a reduction on their school tax bill.
Instead, homeowners can apply for STAR on their New York income tax return, then if qualified, will get a rebate check. The STAR refund will be considered taxable income (so the state will get revenue from the STAR refunds). Homeowners who already have STAR will not see any changes. More information here:
